"The Serpent"

II "In The Beginning"

Out of the depths were we called,

kindred descendants from creator;

shared common origin,

lived between water, land.

After making lake appearance,

stroking powerfully towards shore,

brought into thought remembrance

of earliest place at earth’s dawn,

where you were acclaimed great, wise,

your beauty emerald reflected moonlight,

sibilant speech soft raindrops on grass.

Creatures looked on in admiration

until a younger sibling unveiled,

whose beauty radiated sun’s splendor;

unique mirror of divine

even though they came

from clay’s common origin,

strode while you crawled.

Their presence your humiliation,

to them creation’s rule was given.

From your dark lair,

sought out a weakness;

delighted, found insecure place,

shared your secret ambition.

Owe no allegiance to anyone,

live for material satisfaction.

To gain world for consumption,

they’d trade imagination.
